Reminder! KOXY Presents: White Fang and Rob Walmart!

This Saturday, February 6th, KOXY is bringing musical talent White Fang and Rob Walmart to Occidental!

White Fang began as a group of friends in high school writing, according to the band's myspace "really precious songs about climbing trees and frenching girls." They played their first real gig in Vancouver, BC, telling their parents they were going on a camping trip. After that, they began expanding. They tackled audience members during shows, and branched out past their local Portland neighborhoods. Marriage Records took the band under their wing, and after high school the band moved into a house dubbed "SK8 and Rhone." They quickly released a CD titled "Pure Evil" that is currently sold out. They have already completed one tour with Rob Walmart, and it is their second tour that brings them here to Oxy, playing their newest record "Whatever."

A Two Week Celebration of Jazz at the Brand Library

The Super Bowl won't be the only big thing that kicks off this weekend. That's right, I'm referring to the two week Celebration of Jazz that begins this Saturday at the Brand Library in Glendale. If you have to attend musical events for school, or you're simply a jazz aficionado, the Celebration of Jazz series is a great opportunity to get some wonderful jazz exposure. This is particularly the case for us penny-pinching college students because all the programs in this series are FREE!

Programs will include music and dance performances, film screenings, and panel discussions with musicians, artists, and educators. A Celebration of Jazz at Brand Library is organized around the The Performance Portraits of Bob Barry, an exhibition of 130 of the Los Angeles based photographer's remarkable images.

Three Awesome Girl Bands at the Smell this Saturday!

This Saturday at Los Angeles' infamous the Smell, in downtown, are three very good bands featuring primarily female musicians. The headliner hails from the Brooklyn scene and is a trio of feisty pop-punk divas. LA's own Best Coast will also be playing, featuring former singer of local Smell band, Pocahaunted, Bethany Constantino. I personally am looking forward to the other opener, Pearl Harbor, which features Piper as the lead singer, and her little sister, 14 year old Skylar. They play a specific brand of Los Angeles dream-pop that I love. They have released an EP so far entitled fittingly, "Something About Those Chaparrals. Doors open at 6 PM.

Reserve the night of Saturday, March 6 for the nineteen-nineties R&B sensation Boyz II Men! Check out Club Nokia for a romantic evening of hits and new material from these chart-topping singers!
