This week, Occidental released an app that you can add to your phone. Why would you want this? I had the same question, so I did some deep investigation to find out what Oxy Mobile has to offer, and how it can be useful to you!
Upon accessing the Oxy Mobile application, you are presented with a list of prompts that can send you in various directions, depending on what you need. The list is: People, Library, ITS Helpdesk, Campus Locator, Oxy Facebook(s), Oxy Twitter, Oxy Flickr, Oxy Youtube, and Upcoming. Allow me to explain what each one does.
People
This helps you find contact information for any administrator, faculty, or staff member. Arranged in alphabetical or by last name, the directory lists the person's name, title, and department. If you don't want to have to keep scrolling down and clicking "more" you can type in any keyword to find someone, including a name, title, or department. It works like a search engine, so you will be presented with any hits that include that keyword. Once you find that lucky individual, you see their work phone number, and email. All you have to do is click on the phone number to call, or on the email to type out an email. This is a great way to find and communicate with people on the go!
Library
This is where you would go if you were just dying to find that awesome Bach prelude. Here you can search the catalog in the same way that you use Oasys. Once you've found what wanted, you can go through your account to reserve that book. The My Account pathway also allows you to renew books, check due dates, check on your requests, and see your account balance. The Library Info pathway shows you photos of the library, and a location as well as area map, plus a full description of the history and regular hours of the library. The final Ask Us pathway presents you with the library phone number and email.
ITS Helpdesk
Here you can find the Location and Hours of the ITS Helpdesk, as well as the phone number and email if you need to get in contact.
Campus Locator
This is probably my favorite thing about this app. Once you access this, you will be asked to allow the app to use your current location. You then select a destination from the extensive list, and then receive a location and area map to guide you to your destination. Awesome! Now I will never be lost trying to find a speaker in a random building again!
Oxy Facebook
This gives you the choice of either the All Campus (this is the official Oxy Facebook page), or Class of 2014 page. The All Campus page has various announcements from the college, including new speakers, faculty awards, etc. The Class of 2014 page is where all the incoming students for next year have the opportunity to ask questions, and you could be the one to answer! From there you can access Facebook as you usually do.
Oxy Twitter
This is the college's official twitter page, that has similar announcements to the Facebook page. Links are posted so you can learn more about speakers, student loan overhaul, and anything else the college is announcing.
Oxy Flickr
These are all photos posted by the college, currently all the photos are from this years dance production (which yours truly was a performer in).
Oxy Youtube
This pathway shows you all the videos on Occidental College's youtube channel, including a video of speaker Andy Lipkins, the Construction of the Hameetman Science Center (as well as many other buildings), President Skotheim's Convocation address, and much more. I highly recommend the "Life of an Oxy Application" video where you can see the process an application to this fine institution undergoes while it's being scrutinized for admission.
Upcoming!
These are all the features that are still in process. Eventually there will be pathways for Athletics, Blogs (like this one!), Calendar of Events, and Course Info.
Overall I'd say this app is extremely useful, and a great addition to any personal app collection. For more information, or to download, go to http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/oxy-mobile/id364020144?mt=8. Don't forget, it's free!
