Happy [Lunar] New Year!

The Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, has arrived! And with this great tradition comes an opportunity to celebrate and experience some really amazing Chinese music. One truly breathtaking show you shouldn't miss is the Shen Yun Performing Arts performance of classical Chinese music and dance. Shen Yun brings together dancers, choreographers, composers, and musicians from all around the world, resulting in a dynamic blend of Eastern and Western instruments.

Keep an eye out for composer and flutist Ningfang Chen, who is designated a “National First-Class Performer” of China. She was a member of China’s Central Philharmonic Orchestra for over 30 years, during which she held concurrent posts as an flute instructor at the Central Philharmonic Society’s conservatory, Beijing Normal University, and Beijing Concert Hall.

Also look for solo artist Xiaochun Qi, who began her study of the two-stringed erhu at the age of six, and is a graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1991 she received the Performer’s Award at the 14th “Spring of Shanghai” International Erhu Competition. Her mastery of this unique instrument is unlike anything you have ever witnessed before.

All of the music the 40-plus member orchestra plays is original and composed to fit perfectly with each dance. The live accompaniment adds an energy and joyful exuberance.Don't miss this beautiful example of Chinese culture!

The performance takes place at The Music Center at 135 North Grand Ave., Los Angeles, and will continue to run through the 14th. Prices range from $39 to $240, you can go to http://laspectacular.com/en_tickets.html to purchase.
